Symptom and Diagnosis of Idle Arm?

What are the symptoms of a failing idle arm? What can I do to test for it?

I have an almost violent shutter of the steering wheel when I brake at speeds above 60mph. Pads and rotors are new. As are the inner tie rod ends and the centerlink.

My outer tie rods ends have torn rubber dust covers...this cant be a good thing.

It would help if you mention the year and model car (I'll assume it's a Merc.) and maybe even the mileage, but a worn out steering damper is the number one suspect, assuming it's a Merc originally equipped with one.

Getting the car up in the air and wiggling all the various suspension and steering joints will generally tell you if any need replacement due to excess wear.

If it happens only when you brake, the problem is brake rotor(s.)

Good luck,
