how to remove dash 240d 123
I have been searching for a thread on how to remove the dash in a 123. I have not found what I was looking for. I am sure I saw one the other day, but can't find it now.
The box that controls the airflow on my 1980 240D apears to be jammed. There is a lever in the console that coltrols a cable that goes to the box, but it only moves half way. My guess is that there is a pencil, nail file or some other debris that has fallen down the defroster vent and jammed the mechanism. The A/C probably has not worked for years. I am replacing the A/C compressor, expansion valve, and drier. I will also remove the condenser and flush it seperatly and also flush the entire system. The mercedes book says to remove the expansion valve, gut it, then put it back in. Without the valve in the block, you can then flush the system effectivley. The remaining problem is to clean the evaporator and heater core. Then of course you install the new expansion valve block. Since it looks like I have to rempove the dash to clear the debris out of the diverter box, it should be a no brainer to remove the evaporator and heater cores to clean them. After cleaning cores, flushing system and replacing components I will recharge with R12. Turns out getting a cert to handle R12 is a cinch. A 30 lb. bottle on eBay sells for about $450. Anything else I should look for while I have the dash off? If I can get it off!
