Transmission problems...

My recently bought Mercedes 1996 C220 has a problem with the transmission being clunky. The oil level seems to be ok. The car lunges forward and the gear engages after a delay even with the brakes applied. The engine idles at 800 rpm . Is the rpm high?
The gear shift is very evident when accelerating. Is there a cheap remedy for this problem..?? Also the engine has a clattering sound . Is some pump worn out..??
