24 year old air bags
I have no reason to believe that these air bags are not Original. The question is obvious, will they work?

I dont see why not. The propellant is sealed and is electrically fired. From what I researched these air bags are some of the most violent on the market.

Bitter Sweet. Will work but could kill you in the process. Since I have long legs and sit far from the Air bag it might not kill me. Just relieved that they will work. Thanks for the info.

Yes, the early DOT spec airbags are quite powerful.
Check out Copart USA - The Source for Online Car Auctions - Home Page You can search by year. When I look at early MBs that are SRS equipped and were in a big accident I see that the airbags have deployed. -J

Early air bags are powerful enough to catch an _UNBELTED_average height / weight male. As a result they are very fast and powerful.
Long ago ( like 95 when I bought the car for them. ) I disconnected the high power bag on Mom and Dads 91 Dodge Spirit as the car is used only round town. They always wear belts so it is worth the risk as a low speed get hurt by bags is more likely than a interstate crash. ( They still have the car. ) Their 99 Blazer and future 97 C280 has the bags connected as they are depowered. Air bags are not a wonder safety device. If you are wearing belts and don't hit the steering wheel they won't do much. Side bags are much more useful as one is closer to the doors , A pillar and side glass. |

I'm not a fan of airbags. They kill short people, and I am one. If I ever buy an airbag equipped car, the driver airbag at least is getting disconnected or removed.

If you have spectacles with glass lenses get them changed to plastic. Airbags can shatter the glass and the shards can blind you. You might survive a crash unharmed but could be permanently blinded

Don't know if they can be turned off.

I've blown a number of early W124 airbags and haven't had one yet that didn't fire.
It's fun to demo these things at tech sessions with a group of car guys, most people have never seen one go off. Jim

On most circa 80's airbags it's not the propellant but the bag that degrades.
They can be disconnected via the SRS system. My 1988 300CE that I bought new had the SRS light come on about 15 years ago. Dealer asked me if I cared about having an airbag and my response was no. Dealer disconnected. Currently have an period AMG/Atiwe steering wheel installed that was designed without an airbag. I'm old, grew up with cars that had no airbags, seatbelts, padded dashes, etc and made it safely to now !

I'll keep mine... I'd rather not break my nose on the steering wheel
![]() One thing I like about the MB is the design of the knee bolster... the thick padding. My legs are very short and nearly touch the lower dash in any car I drive, so in a crash they're going to hit the dash. My newer cars just have hard plastic trim in that area in front of the crash brace. :/ -J

I'm curious why the OEM's didn't go with a four or five point harness as an upgrade from the three point. It's a lot cheaper, simpler, and more reliable than an airbag system. It's probably a lot more effective, considering NO major racing series uses airbags, but they all use five (or six) point harnesses. There is the matter of taking longer to put on and take off than a three point, but I've used a five point harness in a road car and it was still a lot quicker than donning and doffing all the proper gear for a motorcycle ride.

Because people wouldn't like it or use it. It's hard to put on, and you can't move around the cabin.

Experience
As a firefighter-medic for the past 13 years in the city of Richmond and in a rural system that has Interstate 95 in it's First Due I have worked many car and truck wrecks. They of course occurred at all speeds and aspects.
I have never seen anyone seriously injured by an airbag deployment. Airbag injuries have been limited to minor friction burns on arms or face. |
