87 300 TDT: Should I buy it or run away?

I stumbled across an 87 300 TDT today. The seller is asking $7500. It has 170K on the clock. It runs and shifts great but has some detail problems: headlight lens broken, antenna broken, one rear window inop., missing hood emblem, center console where switches are located is delaminating. Otherwise interior is in very nice shape.It looks as though the injector pump has been replaced (it is cleaner than the rest of the engine). I was told by a local MB tech to keep away from this model. He said there is a reason they only sold it for one year in the US. What are those reasons? I like this body style and I love turbo diesel engines. Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, don't hate me, but I am a former BMW tech,and will probably perform most repairs myself so labor is not an issue for me. I guess I would like to move up to a Mercedes Benz. 8)
