Hello, I have a 190E and I am getting some diesel (puttering) noise coming from my engine. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how much it might cost? I realize that it could be many things, but any help would be appreciated.

Scotty,
I really hope that my first thought is totally off target. Whenever I'm at my Dad's house with my 240D, he jokes that it sounds like the rod bearings are going out. The sound of loose rod bearings is very similar to the sound of an idling diesel engine. Have you recently lost oil pressure for any reason? Scotty,
I will have to agree with Larry. One way to also tell is when decellerating, the noise will become more audible if it is the big-end (main) bearings.... the sound will be the same on idle, accel, or decel if it other bearings. Also some exhaust leaks will sound like a diesel engine. Just some things to consider. Check the belt tensioner shock to see if it rattling. Take a long screwdriver or pry bar and apply pressure to the shock to see if the noise stops. Be careful to stay away from the fan blades. Hope this helps plus its a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.
Good Luck... |

My oil pressure is fine and seems to be normal. I will try to hear this during decellerating but I think it does it most of the time. More when at idle and when the engine is warming up. It's not very loud, but noticeable. Beatle Juice---Can anyone tell me where the belt tensioner shock is or what it looks like so I can apply pressure with a screwdriver? Thanks everyone,

It looks like a small shock absorber about 10 inches long. It is located at the front of the engine, just behind the surpentine belt. It attaches to the cylinder head and the belt tensioner.
