I had my pump replaced on the 300D
and kept the replaced MBZ pump. (was dripping from the weep hole) How are these rebuilt? I know I can't do it myself but how does a shop do it? Curious. ------------------ 1979 300D 133K miles 1989 300SE 1995 C280 |

Shops don't do it. We buy the Mercedes rebuilt units. The rebuilders are set up for this with specail pullers and presses to take the pump apart and gauges to put it back together to exacting tolerances.

The old cast iron pumps are pressed together. Some have snap rings in various locations. Since M-B started selling rebuilts, it isn't worth the bother to buy the kits. I rebuilt a few 6.3 pumps over the years...but those were bit more expensive. If the core is a "Genuine Mercedes" casting(with the trademark on it)save the core. The core charge on the rebuilts used to exceed the price of the pump.

It is actually a pretty simple procedure, we do it on old Jaguars all the time. Next time your 600 needs a pump I would seriously look for someone who will rebuild it. The last one we did the new pump would have been near $2000. The rebuild kit was less than $200.
The 600 has an engine oil fed viscus coupling similar to a small torque convertor on the front (I presume thats why its so expensive.) |
