for some reason my trans isint catching correctly when slipping into third gear.
it mostly occurs when im accelerating harder than usual. sometimes i catch it when its about to then i let off the gas and it kicks into third. but when i dont the engine revs all the way up! outch! the problem seems to get worse every week. my MB tech says i should try adjusting the shift points by turning the adjustment screw behind the air cleaner housing, is this a good idea? yes, i did check the ATF level.
your responce will be greately appreciated
thanks,
adam

It is time for a transmission overhaul. Sorry for the bad news. The good news is that the Mercedes Original trannys are cost effective. They carry a two year warranty. You can now get a Mercedes transmission installed cheaper than a tranny shop wants to rebuild it. BEWARE Most tranny shops are butchers on Mercedes.

It is unlikely that adjusting the control pressure linkage will eliminate the flaring you describe. A clutch pack is going and it will not get better with time. Get your foot out of the gas and get thyself to a MBZ tech who knows what he is doing..Benzmac is right

i had my car checked out by a trans technician and it was running fine for him.
ever since then it has not slipped. he pushed the car a little harder than i do and that cleared it for some reason. i'm having a fliter and a fluid change tomarrow. hopefuly it will dissappear. is thier any explanation for this? could the old fluid be making it stick?
thanks for your comments,
adam

Sure,
1. Stranger things have happened.
2. Could have been a hung valve in
the valve body that somehow freed up.
3. Pray that it doesn't happen anymore.
4. Glad to see you're not shouting Adam.
5. Have a pleasant good day.

Adam --

Though this transmission may have internal problems (hard to say from a distance), it is an absolute requirement that you first rule out disintegrated shift linkage bushings. With complex systems (like transmissions), an assumption is usually made that the most complex part is the problem, and transmissions are frequently misdiagnosed as needing serious internal work because of this faulty heuristic.

Again, you may need internal work, but you must rule out this less-than-$5 repair first.

An easy test is to put the car in drive (on or off, doesn't matter) and "feel" the shifter play from front-to-back. Anything more than 1/8" or so is indicative of worn/failing bushings . . .

I have written up the procedure for replacing these bushings, and it is located at: http://hsb.baylor.edu/html/easley/autofaqs/bush.htm

Anyone that has a MB with more than 60K miles or 7 years old should replace these as a maintenance item. When ordering them, ask for the new linkage clips, too -- much easier to use than the old ones. We're talking $5 or so for all parts -- cheap, cheap transmission "insurance" . . .
