Oil Pressure
I'm looking to buy a new(used)car hopefully another MB or Volvo, just wanted to know what should in general a normal oil pressure be in a Mercedes Benz. The attached picture is of a 1993, 190E-2.6 is that a normal pressure for this car with only 24,000 miles?
Also any one in this forum have any experience with the Land Rovers, the Rover, or the Discovery, I am looking at those two cars too. Thanks

Thats a bit low! Should be no lower than 1.5 at warm idle on a 2.6 if I remember right and 3 the moment you touch the gas peddle.
Mike.

I noticed that temp reading after I posted...ouch! Is that
a "sunnyside" reading? I hope so Mike.

"Normal" hot idle pressure is about 1.5 Bar in cold to mild weather. In very hot weather, especially in stop and go driving, the idle oil pressure will often be lower. I've seen idle oil pressure as low as 1.0 Bar around town in traffic on trips to Phoenix in the summer with 20W-50 oil and the coolant temperature in the range of 100-105C - ambient temps in the low 100s F.
The owner's manual says that idle oil pressure as low as 0.3 Bar is acceptable. What was the ambient temperature and driving conditions when you shot the photo, and what SAE weight oil is installed? Also, what was the coolant temperature? (The temp gage is not visible in the photo.) You don't find too may 190s with such low mileage! Duke Last edited by Duke2.6; 06-07-2004 at 11:04 PM. |

Oil pressure
Just to clarify,
The above picture is from a MB 190E-2.6 that is currently being advertised on E-bay with 20,181 miles. On my 95 E-320 the oil pressure immediately jumps to 3 after the car is turn on so I was assuming that 3 was the normal at idle for most MB. Thanks

On my car.. after driving a long distance in hot tempretures, the oil pressurs is somewhere between 1.0-1.5 at idle. When I start the car in the garage.. its at 2.0-3.0... in both cases it goes to 3.0 when accelerating.

Re: Oil pressure
Quote:
After the engine including the oil fully warms up - say after ten minutes or driving - the hot idle oil pressure will likely be less than 3 bar. Duke |

On my car(W124, but still a 2.6 litre), it's 3 bar at cold, about 1.5 bar at warm idle and constant 3 when throttle is pushed(regardless of rpm, even at 1500). Oil is 10W-40

The pressure in the pic is not low. If it's right after cold start, it is. But, at hot idle, it certainly is not. It is perfectly acceptable for the oil pressure, during very hot idling conditions, to drop below 1.0 bar.
Instead of relying on the dash gauge, during the PPI have a compression test done.
