190e Auto Shift Lever Binding

I have an 88 190E with the 2.3 engine and an automatic transmission. Lately, it has become very difficult to move the shifter through the different positions. It acts as though the mechanism is binding. Other than requiring a lot of energy to move the shifter........the trans works fine. Does anyone have any ideas and how to fix them? Appreciate any help anyone can provide.
