Center Console on 1987 190 E 2.3
I am trying to remove my center console (houses blower switch, climate control unit, radio and ashtray) but I have not been successful. I removed the 2 upper screws but there are no lower side screws to remove. My console extends all the way down to just in front of the automatic shift and sits on that forward lower console. Are there screws underneath the ashtray? I have not been able to remove the pull-out part of the ashtray. How is that done?
Something is holding the console from pulling away!! I would greatly appreciate some quick advice as my climate control unit needs to be replaced so that I have AC. Thanks! |

There are screws under the ashtray & also screws securing the ashtray to the console

Thanks for your reply M.B. Doc.
I've looked for screws that hold the ashtray in place but do not see them. Where are they located? Thanks!! |

Heh M.B. Doc!
I finally got the damned ashtray out and located the additional screws. Everything was straight forward from there on. Thanks for the tips that helped me stay persistent. |

M B DOC,
Do I need to take out the center console on my 91 190E to replace the gear selector light bulb? |

Yes, remove the ashtray insert, remove screws underneath.
Prise up and remove the plastic trim form around the gear selector. Two screws above that through the veneer (lay on the seat and look up easily seen and removed). Then you need to remove the screw at the aftermost part of the centre console (under the carpet inlay). hen the tricky and dodgy bit. Carefully list the rear end of the centre console while allowing the tounges to drop out at he ashtray end - sort of a rotating undocking motion. The switches will come out of their sockets as you lift. Be careful the veneer substrate is easy to damage during undocking. Good luck.

Thank you Norman.
So I don't actually need to take the console completely out, just raise it enough to get at the socket? Or am I wrong about this? ![]() |

No - sorry, I was not clear.
Once the tongues at the front end disengage - take the centre console out. I was just concerned about the care required to prevent damage! NormanB
