Oil Filter Collapse

I have been noticing a disturbing trend of late in all the cars whose oil I change on a regular basis: All of them w/ the canister style filters (could be the screw on type too, but I can't see in them) have been collapsed when pulled for oil filter change. They look sort of crushed. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or knows it as a symptom to a particular problem?
All of the cars are running Mobil 1 Synthetic (15w-50 or 10w-30) and using Stealership ordered MB filters. All are getting their oil changed at around 7000 miles.

Thanks for any help.....I am begining to get the fear here....cold sweats @ night and chased by crushed oil filters.....

yes, I posted a thread on that in the diesel section with pics. Happened to me once. I think it was a Hengst filter on my w123.

No other episode since.
Someone gave a plausible reason.

Just Changed My Oil

I just changed oil and filter today on a 1989 420 SEL. A Bosch filter was used and there was no failure of it. The Bosch filters have a net around the paper. The oil was Canadian Tire Formula 1 synthetic 5W50. Changed at 5,000 KM.

I'm guessing it's due to using the strap-type wrenches (or some other type that grabs the filter around the middle) and using a lot of force due to over-tightening the filter when it was put on. It may also have to do w/ the extended oil-change intervals, as the filter housings are being subjected to heat and stress for a longer period of time.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Mercedes changed vendors to use a cheaper and smaller filter made in France vs. the ones they used to get from German suppliers.

Get a Mann, Bosch or Knecht filter and you should have no problems.
