Rough idle, etc, etc... (used search)
After about a week of searching through these forums for an answer to my problem I think I have an idea. I just wanted to present my exact situation and make sure that I'm not barking up the wrong tree. Here's what's wrong:
The car usually starts and runs fine until engine temp reaches about 80c (I say usually because about once a week on starting the engine will be very bouncy for the first 2 or 3 seconds, then it levels off.) Once I hit 80c there is a pretty annoying "bump" every 10 or so seconds at idle. When starting from a stop there will sometimes be a bump or two before I reach about 10mph, at which point the car runs perfectly. The problem is noticeably worse with the AC running. The other (most likely related) issue is that the cruise control causes the car to drive rather jerky. If I'm cruising down the highway at 70mph or so the car is as smooth as can be, but when I switch over to cruise control the car cruises very jerk...ily (?). If I rest my foot on the gas pedal during cruise control I can feel the pedal depressing and releasing repeatedly. The car does not smoke at all, if that helps any. So it seems that my likely culprits (from the seaches I've done here are either the OVP, a very expensive wiring harness or the EA/CC/ISC module (Electronic acceleration, cruise control, idle speed control). Anybody able to help me narrow this one down? If any more info is needed, please let me know, and thanks, as always for the help. Okay, one more piece of info...
When in Park the idle is much smoother, almost the way it "should" be. Any ideas? |

If you have a rough idle in drive, the very first thing to check is the motor mounts. If they've never been changed, I'd bet that is the cause of the roughness at idle.
I wouldn't believe there was anything wrong with mine with only 65K on the clock. I'm here to tell you that new motor mounts made such a huge difference in the way the car idled, my wife didn't realize the car was running after she started it. Apparently later mounts are not solid rubber but filled with fluid. They don't last as long as the old ones did and they can collapse. Have it checked by a knowledgable person. |
