and the indicator light, symbol being a circle surrounded by another broken circle....this is for an alternator, yes? And it's coming on intermittently...does that indicate a problem different from being on continuously? Thanks.

Sounds more like the brakepad wear indicator. Eyeball your brakepads before you spend money.

Ken, that's the brake pad wear indicator light. It probably lights up when you apply the brakes. Most likely the front brake pads need to be replaced. Check them first, then the rear brake pads.
