Is the 722.6 transmission oil really eternal???
The owner's manual on my S 500 L states that the 722.6 transmssion oil should NEVER be changed.
The local M.B. dealer here in Costa Rica says that they have found out that due to the extreme weather (very humid and rapid tropical temperature changes) and traffic conditions (short distances/continuous stops) here, the special transmission oil used on the 722.6 auto transmission should be changed every 60,000 kms. They point out to a couple of W140s who had fatal transmission failures at about 90,000 and 100,000 kms. here. After a post morten inspection they found the oil to be defective. Do you beleive this story? Comments would be appreciated.

No I don't, and can personally attest to a certain 97 E300D with a 722.6 that went (the last I knew) 300,000 MILES with the original fluid still in it. This is in Wisconsin where we have our own set of "weather brutalities" that may not be the same as Costa Rica, but very demending nonetheless.

I changed mine at 70k miles just to get some clean fluid in there and for peace of mind.

Yes, change the fluid!! For every trans that goes 300,000 miles with original fluid WE have replaced 50 that didn't make 100,000 miles. Don't wait! ANY 722.6 trans before 6/98 could fail at any point.

Although I always deeply appreciate and admire Gilly's replies, I have to thank (as usual) M.B. Doc for his reply on this matter.
Tropical weather is indeed fatal on many things in this part of the world. At one point in the morning it could be sunny, 86°F and 40 % humid. In the next 15 minutes it could be raining, 72°F and 100% humidity. Then, by the next hour it could be back to the original pattern. I really don't believe any oil can stand ETERNAL proper viscosity and protection. In fact, the local M. B. dealer recommends engine oil changes at 5,000 kms. with regular oil and at 10,000 kms. with fully synthetic.
