help
84 300D The sheet metal pan or shield inboard of the front caliper has rusted to the point that I pulled it off to stop terrible noise. How crucial is this shield what is it called and where can I get a new one? Will there be problems running without it? Thanks

It's a dust shield to prevent brake dust from accumulating on the steering knuckle and ball joints. While not critical for operation, it should be replaced to keep the supsension parts tidy, unless you're willing to clean off the joints. The shield is a replacement part, either from the dealeship, online parts or recyclers.
