No, that is dealer COST. The dealer will then mark this up by 30-50%, sometimes more. Lowest price I know of is at parts.com for ~$630 plus a hefty shipping fee (they seem to make up for low prices by hosing you on S&H).

I can get it for $550 at my local dealer. :D

Note: Comes from Germany = three weeks shipping, and there are only nine in stock.

At that price, I don't expect them to sell out this week.

W123 Tools

I need to rent MBZ 280E tools for steering box adjustment: 19mm box-end (123 589 01 03 00) and 6mm allen (123 589 01 10 00) - both 90 degrees and long handles.

79Mercy 05-13-2009 10:56 PM

you don't need them....

...seriously...? Have you tried with regular tools (box wrench and 90 allen), by chance?

toomany MBZ 05-14-2009 10:39 AM

Once you get the tools, loosen the lock nut and turn the allen anti clockwise a bit, that'll tighten it up. If you go too far, you'll bind up the steering, good luck.

There may a difference in size between the '77 intake and the '79 intake. On the '77 280E, there is absolutely no way to make the adjustment with conventional tools due to extreme lack of room.

get under the car, you can do it

32 point deep socket

I'm a new member .... need a special socket to repair injection pump leaks .. It's not clear how to reach an individual menber that's offering the tool ... I'd also like advice on repairing my ignition switch ... It works ok thru the 1st 3 clicks (Glo plug warm up) .. no starter engagement ... I have to jump the starter to start the engine.

Thanks,

I don't know an elegant way to reach another member directly. What I do is go to search -> advanced search -> search by user name -> <enter user name> -> search now -> pick a thread with a low number of replies -> find a post by the user -> click on the user's name at the top of a post -> select emial or private message, whichever is available. If there's an easier way, I haven't found it.

I'll bet my neighbor's cat your neutral start switch is out of adjustment or you need a new switch. If you can move the shift lever any amount forward and back while the lever is in the neutral detent, chances are you need new bushings in the rod between the bottom end of the lever and the transmission. Further chances are there may no longer be bushings or even remnants of bushings on the rod. One way to test for a working neutral start switch is to slide the shift lever forward and aft of the neutral position with the with the key in the start position. You might find the sweet spot that allows the engine to start. Make sure there's nothing dear to you ahead of or behind the car when you try this!!! The transmission might pop into gear as you move the lever to where the starter engages. I wouldn't mess with adjusting the rod if the bushings are questionable or absent. Press in new bushings and chances are you won't have to mess with rod length.

I do.;)

Copy the name of the member off the tool rental list.

Press User CP on the left side of the blue bar near the top of the screen.

Press Send new message from the menu found on the left side of the screen.

Paste the name of the member into the recipients box.

Type message.

Send message.

Three members offer it for a $10 rental fee, plus shipping costs (see the first post on this thread, it's called a "delivery valve socket"). Or you can buy one brand new for about $40, MB part number 617-589-01-09-00.
