1977 280SE Transmission...Need Help
My 77 280SE's tranny I think is stuck on neutral. even with the engine running, I can move the shift lever from R to D or any gears but it seems like the shift lever is disconnected. Still trying to troubleshoot and I need plenty of help.
One more question, what is the purpose of that black piece sticking out of the tranny as shown in the picture. I think mine used to be wedged against the trans body but i noticed that it got dislodged or something. |

Black (plastic?)tube on top is....
probaly a breather hose. Put the car on jackstands and check out the linkage path.

Also the center console and shift gate on the 116 provide easy access. The problem could be something really simple like a ring clip that dislodged from the shift lever mechanism.
Am assuming your 280SE does not have a column shift. Did they even make an automatic 116 column shift? ..... i dont know. |

Tried yesterday to get the shift lever out but had problems with the shift-knob. Someone posted that the shift knob's got a force fit against the shift lever and to remove it you need to apply a channel lock grip around the knob and use a rubber mallet and apply pressure from the bottom to dislodge the shift knob. Well, I tried it but I wasn't successful. Any other stuff I can do better?
Also, are there any other openings or access over the bell housing or transmission that will give me easy access to troubleshoot from the inside of the car? When you're talking about the center console and shift gate, you mean take the center console out and access through where the shift lever's located right? Will be waiting for more help!!! Thanks in advance. |

Hmmm, my last 116 had a locknut underneath the knob which itself just unscrewed from the shift arm. I sure as hell wouldnt be grabbing it with pliers and hitting it with a hammer. But is it critical to remove the knob just too have a look see underneath?
You should be able to slide the console panel over the knob after you've unplugged the accessory switches. Then temporarilly taping the shift gate to the knob should provide sufficient access to have a look at *console* shift arm linkage underneath.... but this will NOT tell you what's going on between the shifter and the tranny - so the entire center console dismantling idea might be a waste of time. Otherwise it sounds like shift linkage connections at the tranny were incorrectly set up (possibly at random?) when the tranny swap was made.... in which case you probably have to bite the bullet and re-install the tranny. . |

Just an update: Finally brought my 280SE to the shop, York's Motorwork's at Walnut Creek. The verdict was, transmission replacement. I will try and get more info on it next week when its time to pick her up. Total cost is going to be $2645 plus tax. That's for a rebuilt tranny with 2-yr warranty. I decided that it's still cheaper than buying a brand new car.
Thanks for all the help from the group. |
