I looked at the base of the carb towards the front of the car and found a hose hanging down which had been almost cut in half. I replaced the hose and hooked it up to the idle vacuum dashpot.

A little history about my possession of this car. I got it from a recent widow. Her husband got it recently and was working on it. When I got it the car didn't run at all. I am new to working on cars, but with the help of this forum I actually got the car running and it actually idles very well. The first time that I drove it I drove it for about 20 minutes and it ran fairly well. I found that the brakes were non-existant and started working on them. (still am). After I thought I had the brakes done, I started the car and put it in R and it died. I had this problem, which now sounds that it may be linked to the missing hose, so I increased the idle just to get it out of the garage and it would run drive for a few minutes and then die and I would barely get it back to the garage. The tranny seemed like it was going out too.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a little history about the car as I have numerous questions about going foward. Will try the car tomorrow and see if that made a difference.

Thanks,
Greg

What is the exhaust object that is a few feet from the muffler? It has a huge hole rusted through it and I am looking for the best way to get it fixed. Looks like some kind of converter or something.

Also, on the driver's door there are 5 buttons. 4 are windows and the other causes a clicking noise on the right side of the engine, where the fuses are and a couple of relays. Speaking of those fuses and relays, could someone tell me what they go to. I believe a couple are for the windows.

Picture of the fuses, relays.

When I acquired this car someone had put in a different fuel pump and the positive wire was just laying there. I have been putting it on the + terminal when running the car. How should this be hooked up properly? Does it need to have some sort of regulator or should I just get a different fuel pump. This one is a universal fuel pump.

Picture of fuel pump.

Thanks,
Greg

Well putting the vaccum line on the carb. made a huge difference. I took the car out for a little drive. The engine seems to run great, but it seems that it should shift into one more gear at around 40mph and never does. How would I go about looking into this?

Thanks,
Greg

Sounds like first series for electric windows, gotta hand it to MB for designing an easy to maintain electric window system. The 5th button could be some kinda relay reset, i dunno. On cold start stalling, that's gotta be normal for the primitive 6 cyl Zenith carb engines. Can remember every '60s 6cyl MB w/Zeniths I've ever owned bein practically undrivable when stone cold. Probly the engine doesnt get enough air with choke flaps down and fuel flowing rich. Peddling the accelerator should help with shifting gears, also with releasing the auto choke when the car warms up.

I do know that when I shift into the lower gears they act as they should. I also got the car up to 60mph and it never did shift again, was running about 4000 RPMs. Also I noticed that when I slowed down to take a sharp curve the transmission did not downshift as it should have and stayed in the last gear it was in. Does that help anymore on my tranny issue?

Thanks,
Greg

Ok, I am replacing the universal electric fuel pump with a mechanical one that is made for the car. Now, I have no clue where this goes. Looking around, the only place that I see where it may go is almost directly under the distributor. I see the same mounting pattern as the fuel pump and it just looks as if something would go there. Does anyone have pictures of this to help me out?

Thanks,
Greg

250s

Hi Greg,
I too have a '67 250S with the Zenith carbs and automatic.
1. Yes, the mechanical fuel pump is located under the distributor behind the power steering pump.
2. On my exhaust, there was a small, oval shaped "muffler" (resonator?) before the axle and a larger, round muffler at the rear bumper. (Both rusted out.) A local muffler shop custom bent up some pipe and added a single, round muffler at the rear. It was too loud! Had them add a second smaller muffer farther forward. Sounds better, but still kind of loud. Total cost $225. A lot better then the $500 + install I was quoted from others. But then again I'm not 100% happy with it....
3. Mine starts pretty good when it's cold out. (20*F to 25*F range.) Have to pump it a few times before I crank it. Then let it idle for a minute or two. Have to take it easy until it warms up.
4. My trans acts the same way - I thought it needed another gear also. I've learned Mercedes just rev high. You can check if all 4 gears are working by starting in the lowest gear. ("2" on mine with a floor shifter.) When in "2" it starts out in 1st gear, then quickly goes to 2nd and stays there. Now manually shift to "3" and then "4". You should feel a distinct shift at every change. If you leave the shifter in "4", they usually skip 1st gear and start with 2nd. This is normal according to the owners manual.
5. If I can remember, I'll check the power window switch function. I thought the front switch was a lock out that disabled the switches on the other doors?
6. I think the four fuses are for the power windows.
Hope this helps,
Dennis

Thanks a ton Dennis.

Hey, do you know what size of allen wrench I need to remove the bolts from the fuel pump section? Also, have you ever had to work on your windows? I took off my door panel because the driver side window will go down but not back up. How in the world do you access the electronics inside the door frame?

Thanks,
Greg

What size of allen wrench or other tool is necessary to remove the bolts from the fuel pump mount on a '67 250S?

Thanks,
Greg

I disconnected the universal electric fuel pump and bought a mechanical fuel pump. I took the 2 mounting bolts out and the resevior had a seal over it. There was a 1/8" thick gasket type piece that crumbled. Is that was goes between the fuel pump and the place where it mounts? My fuel pump came with a paper gasket, but I am guessing that this other piece was a gasket as well. Does this sound right?

Thanks,
Greg
