280SE 4.5 battery?
Hi,
What do you owners put into the 280SE 4.5 for a battery? My recently-purchased 1972 did not come with one. TIA, Doug |

The short answer is "the big, heavy top post one". If you're shopping in Walmart, that will find you the right thing (what I got for myself 2 weeks back).
Batteries are sold by size and logevity. The size will be same for any benz before 1980 or so (if the store doesn't list the right size for this car). As for age, go by what you can afford or can find. You'll be charged at least 5$ for a battery core unless you can find a dead battery to return at purchase. -CTH |

Without checking the archives here, I believe the battery size for 108's is 48.

The 4.5 takes a size 49. It's a long, large, heavy battery. I got an Exide and I like it. Opinions on which battery brand to choose will be as varied as which brand of car to buy!

I have a number 49 Interstate battery what I am very happy with. Of course being out here now in sunny Southern CA I think I could get by with 8 D cells!
Speaking of batteries does anyone know what kind of bracket is used to hold the back of the battery down in V8 models W108's/W109's. Right now am using the gravity method...

Bill, I too am using gravitational force but, IIRC, I have seen a plate bolted at the rear (adjacent to firewall) of the 108/109 tray which just catches the lower lip of a proper battery to hold it in. Perhaps one at the front too??

yes, now that you mention it, the v8 cars I've worked on all use the clip at the base method on one side. -CTH

My tray has said "Clip" bracket, but it doesn't actually hold the battery and can't be adjusted to do so AFAIK. It stays in place by gravity alone amazingly well, despite the massive amount of G-Forces I surely have put it through.

The firewall end of the battery tray has a lip that the lower edge of the series 49 battery slips under. The forward end of the tray should have a 2"-3" long clip, help down with a couple small, maybe 8mm head screws. This clip also goes over the lower edge of the battery case. That is all that hold down the battery in my 108.
