Rear diff mount on '72 250 - wrong part??

I went to change out my rear differential mount and I think I have the wrong part. A picture of the part I have is attached - but my car does not have this type of mount. My car has one 14mm Allen head bolt that is attaching the mount to the differential and the head of this bolt points straight down to the ground. Anyone else run into this problem? I can not find the right part anywhere online. Differential Mount

You need to check and specify for your model and VIN - They changed the design of the back cover and mount - in 010 & 011 sedans, at chassis 065704 and 084210, respectively, apparently with the M130 engine. You can visualize the two types in http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=114010&M=114%2E920&CT=F&cat=028&SID=35&SGR=001&SGN=01 (items 90 and 91). The LH one in the pic, with the single bolt up into it and which mounts with four bolts up into two backing plates above the frame, is the earlier design; If you have an earlier cover plate, (likely if your VIN is before 065704, or 065682,4,5,or 7) you likely had cover 115 351 12 08 and you need mount 115 351 87 48. I believe that one earlier cover only had the web at the back of the case up through which you mounted the one vertical Allen head bolt. The later-style cover plate, which used large bolts and lockwashers going forward through the mount into the cover, is 115 350 16 02, and uses the RH type mount in the pic, 115 351 34 42, also the same in 123's, (subs to 123 351 11 42), plus four screws 115 990 35 01 (I believe they either thread right down through crossmember into the mount's plate or have nylock nuts on top, rather than the older type, which threaded up through crossmember into the backing plates.) That appears to be what you were sent. Give Phil a call, I'm sure he can figger and straighten this out. You may be best served to get the newer-type plate and mount - not that you should ever need a replacement ever again, but if you did - the 123's mounts will be around for a long time... Hope this helped, not cornfused... Stan Last edited by Tristar1959; 06-01-2006 at 03:19 PM. |

Thanks Stan, Phil wasn't in today, so I'll try him tomorrow. I'm getting so many conflicting stories from others on the net and from my dealer, etc. that I don't know if the mount is still available. Ryan

				Possible retrofit

All the reference material I'm using is old microfiches ('93) and parts books ('79) - and it is probable that any 114/115 rear end can be retrofit to the newer design - at least I'm sure the new mount with its 4 bolts can be used in older chassis - the part I'm not certain about is whether or not you can use it with the older cover plate (unlikely), or have to get the newer-design cover plate, which I'm quite sure will fit the housing okay. There have been contacts given here for guys at MB collector car/antique sites - if you can find them, you'll be much more likely to get a solid, authoritative opinion. Stan |

I don't see anyway the newer mount (the part I have) will fit the older cover plate on my vehicle. The newer cover plate is available, but only through the dealer and they want over $200. which is way too much. I don't know if the older style mount, with the ONE mounting bolt that goes UP (perpendicular to the ground) through the differential and into the mount, is still available (the newer rubber mount is attached to the differential via 2 bolts that run parallel to the ground).
