73 220/8 - won't start

HELP ME PLEASE! My 73 220 w/ 4cyl gas engine, stromberg has been hard starting or wont start at all- depite new plugs, points, condensor. When it does start, it runs very rough, and I'm having a heck of a time getting the timing set- any guidance, ideas etc would be greatly appreciated. The car was very well taken care of and looks (and was running) great.

You say it 'was running great" - was there any action done before that time, like did you shotgun all the ignition parts and then it started not running well, or was it running poorly for no reason, then you replaced the parts?
I would suspect bad plugs (I've seen bad Champion plugs right out of the box) - I prefer NGK plugs in my 220.
And the points gap is correct?
Also always suspect a used condensor!
The best thing I did to my 220 was to replace the points with an optical ignition and CD ignition. I've not changed plugs or points in over 3 years since then. Before that I was always fiddling with them to keep it running properly!
Another thing, I have a little binding in my distributor unless I piull up just slightly when its loose. I loosen the hex bolt for turning the distributor but don't rotate it, just lift a TINY amount to loosen the drag in the coupling then its fine. YMMV

Remove the carb's top chamber..... phillips head screws..split diaphram is not unusual.

If so...do NOT buy after market diaphram...they are too stiff.
Fill damper with engine oil.

The timing should not be a big deal. Gap the points. Put a timing light on cylinder 1 and have a helper crank the engine. Rotate the distriutor to the right "static" setting, and tighten the distributor clamp enough to allow the distributor to be rotated. Then start the engine, set the timing to the idle spec, and check the advance at higher RPM.
