How do I prime when changing fuel filters on a 1976 300D?
I just started running biodiesel in my 1976 300D (115). The inline filter looks gross and I'm losing power, so no surprise, I need to change it.
My question: I know that newer models have a primer pump that allows you to get the air out of the fuel lines. My car just has what looks like an altitude setting in the spot the primer is on newer models (you can turn the dial to regulate how much fuel the engine is getting based on altitude). How do I prime this thing? Can I change the filters and start it without priming it? I'm new at this, so go easy on me!. |

There should be a disc shaped pump just aft of the secondary cartridge filter canister at the where the fuel is filtered and sent back to the IP.
If you have a rebuit motor you should see either a white handled knob on the side of the IP which needs to be unscrewed and that is the pump. If it is updated it will be a black plunger which just needs to be pumped to get fuel to the IP. Hope that helps! |

Welcome n00b!!! Helpful to fill out your profile and signature more completely, with your car details and location, for better replies.
Diametrical (Curtis) knows what he is talking about, but if you'd like more opinions, and good ones, you'll do well to post in the Diesel discussion section here, especially if it concerns the engine. It is about the busiest Diesel Mercedes forum in the world, and its got new traffic 24/7. Plus, if you are of the fairer sex, as your username suggests, you are gonna get swarmed with advice. Those guys LOVE to help diesel damsels in distress!!!!!
