The alloys of the 70s were available as an option for the W108/109 cars. A set of 14 inch bunts from any 450 will suite you fine.

Many fellows have used even later wheels. Personally, I find them out of place, but that's because I've been dealing with these cars for over 20 years and have gotten used to the status quo.

Here is a link that will give you an idea on the different type of rims/wheels on your car.

What is the advantage to using 15-inch rims? Is it just for ascetics or is there a significant increase in performance?

16X8" wheels

This is not a 108 but very similar so it may be of interest. Here is my 111 with 16X8" R109 wheels(Very poor picture) This resulted in much improved handling and stability due to the shorter sidewall. Slightly rougher ride but well worth it.

I felt compelled to choose W108 in the Poll, even though I have no idea what it's for.

I find those wheels much more attractive than the Bundts, though when I upgrade from my Fintail's stock 13 inch rims, I have a set of 14s off an early W108 that will allow me to keep my original hubcaps. Of course I'll have to get some larger trim-rings.

Happy Motoring, Mark

This looks fantastic. And that link is a keeper! The 15-hole chrome wheels near the bottom look pretty good. The really nice thing about MB wheels is that almost all models share the same bolt battern and center bore. So, swapping wheels around is very easy.

It was actually quite a process to fit the wheels. First I converted to studs as I needed longer bolts due to the spacers I had to use. The studs make mounting the wheels much easier also. I got a set of cheap thin spacers and used them in different combinations to determine the correct spacer thickness for the front and rear (I did not drive the car with the temp spacers as they were not hub-centric)
Then I obtained high quality hub-centric spacers in the required thickness.

beautiful car, but stick with period correct rims (a set of penta's would look great) or stick with the color matched hubcaps (my personal favorite. . coming soon to a SL-C in my garage)

That's one of the most beautiful Mercedes ever made. And that from a company that makes beautiful cars in general. And dark colors are best on the 108 body in my opinion. My first Mercedes was a 71 108 280S. Almost identitcal car to yours but mine was dark burgundy red. If I were you I would leave those wheels as Mercedes intended them. 14 inch Bundts were an option but I dont believe they enhance the look of the vehicle any. I would never attempt any other kind of "sports" wheels on a 108. They are not sports cars.
