76 300d 115 new preglow relay still won't start(fixed)
started having problems with the preglow time relay (or so i thought) not staying engaged to keep the glow light on.
got a new one installed and car still won't start. new fuel filters, 2800 miles on oil change just one quart low. never had problems starting before. i am getting white diesel vapor from the muffler so it would seem more like a compression problem or the glow plugs just are not warming up. not sure what to enter in the search box to look up ideas on where to start looking for the problem. i do have a voltmeter to check the glowplugs but not sure what i'm looking for or how to test. btw hooked up the old relay this morning it stayed on 2 min no start hooked up new relay stayed on 1 min 40 sec still no start it's about 50 degrees here now. no haynes book in town but i wouldn't know where to start anyway. any ideas? thanks changed out the glow plugs, had 2 burnt ones Last edited by jlwggns; 05-16-2004 at 11:02 AM. |

Had a similar problem. Here is what I found. The GP's all checked out good, had voltage going to and from relay (when activated). It drove me crazy till my Indy asked to look at the "inbound" + wire. The wire was capable of carrying +12V but not capable of carrying the amperage needed to activate the relay as the wire inside the shielding had deteriorated. Replaced that wire and all was good again.
just my .02 and a good lesson for me.
