Washing the Engine Compartment
 

Aside from the usual distributor and alternator and coil, are there any other parts that I should maybe not directly spray?

Every time I washed my 5.0 Mustang engine, the EGR valve would seize up and require a bit of WD40 and a smart rap with a hammer.

Those are the big three. After you are done, it may be wise to examine all the linkages to ensure you still have proper lubrication of the ball pins and rollers. Also, try to avoid pressure sprays on the major electrical connections, like those to throttle sensors, fuse box, etc. Maybe a little Saran Wrap would help.

I just cleaned the dookie out of the 280TE I just bought. I used Foamy Engine Bright (2 cans) and a bottle and a half of Simple Green and a long thin brush and a toothbrush.

Basically, do one half of the engine bay scrubbing everything you can, then do the other side. And wear bad clothes. Most things seem to accept water just fine, but beware anything that could get water into the engine. Once you got it done, let it sit in the sun for awhile, then kick it over and drive it until all that stuff dries out.
