I noticed that my oel pressure dipped at idle when it usually is at full capacity before. Is this cause for concern? This happened just once last week while stopping at a few lights.

Its normal to drop when the motor is good and hot. NOrmal is half to one third of the full pegged pressure when hot.

Liondancer;
When I was having issues with my ignition system and fuel system the oil pressure was problematic. When I switched to the Pertronix Ignition unit, cleaned the fuel system and was then able to get a really decent timing, the oil pressure gauge settled into the more normal range/action. I would start with the basics-loose wiring-maybe a spark plug wire isn't on the terminal, etc. A new battery can do wonders for your electrical system as well as an alternator which is puttting out the continuos correct voltage. Good luck. ![]() |

Very normal. If you have been running fresh 20W50 (thick) oil in cold weather, it will stay up high longer.

I always get full pressure on the 45 hash when the car is running. Is this NOT normal?

The owners manual explains this. (RTFM)
These are indicators of engine wear condition 15 at hot idle is normal, nothing to worry about 7 at hot idle is time for bearings. engine overhaul. Oil system and coolant system monitoring are there for a reason. It is possible to have good compression and running and weak oil pressure. I had a catastrophic failure on an 220SE M127. wiped out the rear cam bearing and a rod bearing. Sudden engine death. pay attention or pay the engine overhaul man. |

Above idle speed the pressure should quickly peg the gauge. At idle it can vary from about 7 to 15 psi and be normal. On very hot days after a long run you can often see very low oil pressure on the gauge at idle, and it may not build up to fully peg the gauge until you pass 1500 rpm...all this is fairly normal on real hot days. When you are charging down the road above 20-25 mph you should always see the gauge pegged. All this assumes you are using the correct weight oil, which for your car is a 20w50 for summer use.
