We have sold our 1956 190SL. The new owner would like to have us fix the intermittant starter drive problem. I spent near an hour last night looking for my 190SL parts manual and couldn't find it.

Does anyone have the number for the starter drive or possibly know of ones existance. I don't usually get good results trying to get these old parts without some number to give my MB rep.

Steve:

If you are just talking about the starter drive, the Table/Item number from the Picture Parts Catalog is 11-2. For reference, SL Auto Haus has it for $114. If you find you need more than the drive (like the whole starter), you might want to consider other than new (they are $1340). But you probably already knew this! If there is anything else you need, let us know!

Steve,
Star Quality has them.
There part # 11-002.
1-800-STAR-199
They take there #'s from the cat reference # [11-2], but will have the Benz #.
It is listed at $80, but there may be a price change from my cat.
I have had good dealing with them.
Arthur

Try your local auto electrical shop. My local shop rebuilt my starter a few years ago with new brushes and a new drive for $95. I believe that it is a very common Bosch item.

Jim,
Wow.
I didn't even plug the numbers in 'cause I would not have guessed Parts Shop would go that far back.
Hat's Off, guys.
And cheaper than I have seen it anywhere else.

Sorry, I didn't get back. I found a drive later that morning from one of my normal suppliers. I don't even know what I spent but I had it Redlabel shipped from New Orleans. I'll check on Monday as I would be real surprised if I paid as much as mentioned here.

The starter had been at my next door neighbor (a starter-gen shop) for a few days and he couldn't find the drive.

I have had a 190SL parts book for years and I spent a bunch of time looking for it and got frustrated. I have parts books for most of the old guys (186,189,198, all the 110/111/112/121 included) and all of the new ones. I never call my suppliers and ask for the part by description so I am indeed thankfull for all the help.

Out of curiosity, are the SL starters discussed here the same as in the ponton sedans, cabrios, and coupes?
