Fuel pump - again!

The fuel pump on my 280SE W108 is giving me so much trouble Ive just about given up on it.

I replaced the seals, and the put the pump back on - and now the car sounds like its struggling every second! It chugs and chugs and chugs, and the spark plugs are filthy now. It MUST be something to do with the pump because before I took it on and off the car was running beautifully - I had to change a seal because it was leaking a small amount of fuel, and just last week It was registered for the first time in 12 years! (Ive only had the car for 1 year). Plus, the fuel pump used to make a rather high wizzing sound - now its a low droney sort of sound.

Is there any other fuel pump I can use on this model 108? Either new or from an older car. Ive been told I can get various ones but not the 108 from my parts supplier.

Any help would be much appreciated. After this Ill finally be able to drive the car without worrying about anything!

You really need to check the fuel pressure and clean the rust out of the tank.

Did you take the impeller off the pump when doing the seal repair ?????????????????

Yes, I did take the impeller off.
Though even after replacing the seals the pump still leaks - now just above and around the live wire connection.
I think Ill take it off the car again to have a better look at everything this time.
Why do you mention the impeller Arthur? I did make sure to put it back on with the narrower sides towards the motor of the pump.

OK

When you take it apart again. look at the impeller again....it is marked so you know which way it goes.
On the terminal leaks , take the wires off and ever so slightly tighten the terminal nuts....there are seals under them and they may stop leaking with just a little tightening.
And make sure you do not have the feed wires wrong [ reversed]

If you get it going, just do that 1 ltr/15 sec test at the inlet to the main fuel filter test I mentioned to you a few weeks ago. That flow rate MUST be met.

Which direction does the impeller spin in? I presume it locks simply buy turning it that 1/8 clockwise/C. clockwise or is there something I forgot to put back on.

when you put the impeller back on - is there anything to hold it there? or do you just turn it a tiny bit to one side - will it matter which side is what im asking

definately the short one.
Ive just taken it off again. It leaks out of every possible place, even from seals Ive just replaced. I dont care if it s repairable anymore - I want a new one so I dont have to worry about it, as Im going to use this car as a daily driver after July, I dont want to have to pull the fuel pump off every weekend.
Dont suppose anyone has a spair lying around anywhere? Or should I go with the cheapest new one I can find at that German star place.

If it is the short one, they are easily rebuildable.
But if you want a new one , go for it.
Very Expensive item, to say the least.

Well, cuz you are in Aussie...I don't know where you get parts.

..but if you go to SLS site ,, look at item 135 on the fuel tank Insert ..that is the kit for rebuild of the short pump.
It is 3- O rings, brushes, and brush springs.
That's it.

Give that Mercmad 6.3 a PM ..he knows where you could prob get that kit right there in your country...or even a pump replacement.
