Question W116 Shock Absorbers > Genuine or not?

Here's one for the brains trust.
I need to replace the rear shock absorbers on my W116.
These are your standard type NOT the self leveling oil type.
After 34 years and 330,000 klms, the original set have finally given up!
Up until now, I've insisted on every replacement part, be genuine, however after seeing the prices of genuine and the likes of Bilstein etc....and reading all the pro's and cons.......I am wondering, if at this stage of the cars life, wouldn't a decent quality pair of shock absorbers from a reputable company, do the same thing? ( at a fraction of the cost).
Can anyone shed some light on my dilema? I don't mind spending the extra money if there is a valid reason, but I haven't come across one yet.
Thanks in advance

I personally just picked up a full set of Bilsteins for our W111 and compliment the great ride of the recent air suspension installation!

We got them from Phil (along with with everything else of course!). They were a little pricey at around $90 but the alternatives were KYB's, which I've used on Mitsubishi's and Honda and they have rode well, just not like a Mercedes. I personally chose to stick with Bilstein over the alternative because I didn't want to sacrifice ride quality to save a few bucks, but I love Mercedes ride quality!

Agree. I just replaced the rear shocks on my fintail with Bilsteins. I think this is a case where it's worth the extra money to get the OEM stuff. Make your supplier run the MB number, though.

Why even consider something else?

Ok guys. I'm getting the message loud and clear, & I appreciate the opinions.
I'll start the research again and see if I can turn up a good deal. Watch this space.
cheers
