Automatic Transmission slipping on 1966 230S W111 - No torque convertor??
On my way to the office to change out the filter and fluid my poor ole girl was applying the power when it was in gear. Felt like a bad torque convertor to me. So after a little reading I find that these cars didn't use a torque convertor. I am hoping to change the fluid and filter to resolve the problem.
If not what do I try next? Anyone have a guide to changing the filter and fluid? I haven't checked my star classic CD but I have a feeling it is not going to show me what I need. Also are Dextron II and Dextron III a suitable fluid? I saw a service bulletin that said to use Dextron II. Thanks as always! |

They use a fluid clutch instead of a TC.
The filter is nothing more than a screen bolted to the bottom of tha valve body. The best scenario is that the fluid is low, the worst is that the clutched are worn and the clutch packs are loose. I have mine apart and all the parts, now I need the time to reassemble it.

Changed out the filter last night. I will post some pics but man has filter design improved over the past 43 years. The new one also has a paper element and allows the fluid to be redirected to avoid screen blockages.
How much fluid do these ole girls need? I really need to update my site!!! |

Quote:
awhile back, someone on this forum in Los Angeles posted about his Fintail tranny slipping. Local shops wanted a small fortune for a rebuild. Turned out it was caused by a simple problem with the electrical circuit used on these early automatics, which have a three-position solenoid mounted on top, connected to a carb-mounted throttle switch. Do a search or try to get a copy of the factory manual to make sure your slipping isn't caused by a problem in the three-position solenoid circuit. Happy Motoring, Mark
