loose shifter in a w111 64 220se coupe
i have a floor shift manual 4 speed shifter problem in my 64 220se coupe. I just bought it and it doesnt shift into 2nd or 4th or reverse i can get it into 1st and 3rd but it feels like it is partially dissconeccted it feels realy loose and sloppy like its not puling the shift rod. Is there a diagram of the shifter mechanism on the web somewhere and also can i take this apart from on top in the car oor do i have to drop the manual transmision to fix it. thanks great car hope to get it back on the road. Any help wil be greatly appreciated there isnt much on these cars out there but this site se3ems to have a wealth of knowledge

Pull the rug off the tunnel and you can remove the access plate for linkage inspection....

thanks arthur i ulled the rug away took off the plastic cover with four bolts then there was a metal plate with two bolts that attached to two rods it looks like my shifter comes thru the hole in this plate and the reason it is sloppy is there sdhould be some kind of bushing wich there isnt so its just real sloppy in that whole does anyone no if this is the case thanks

I'd guess the bushings in the shifter as well as shift linkage rod bushings are shot. I'll try to find some pictures of parts needed in the am.

My roommate's 1966 200 W110 floor shift car had this same problem. It needed 2 new rubber bushings under the shifter. They are inexpensive.

yeah cool yeah it looks like the ball part at the end of the shifter should be popped into a bushing instead its just floating in the hoe through the metal plate. Does anyoone know where a good place torder this and w111 parts is thanks

yeah i have a 4 speed manual transmission. not an auto the second link shows a diagram of the manual transmission it looks likr but not any of the parts for the shifter mechanism like i said there is the shifter wich is attached by one bolt to a shift rod that goes towards the front of the car then there is a plate that bolts over the shifter to two rods underneath that go towards the front oof the car as well its looks ike those rods dondt move at least forwrd backward they are like stabilizers for the pate so you can use the plate as a pivt to pull the shifter agaisnt to move the main shift rod. The problem is the whole in the plate is a good amunt bigger than the ball at the bottom of the shifter so its real sloppy it looks like there shoould be some sort of bushing pops in there with the ball like a cup or something to ho;d the bottom oof the shifter steadier. Any help on a diagram that shows the shifter parts and or a good place to order the parts thanks. I guess i might just call the classic center i live 15 min from it. thanks great site not many places to go for w111 coupes

Youi have the single rod shifter ..the two other rods are just stabilizer links.
The parts for that shifter are the ball socket and cups under the shifter plate and the bushings at the trans end where the shift-tube goes into the trans eyelet. Easy fix. Same parts the 113 uses. cool thanks im guesing i can get these parts at the classic center although there prices seem expensive is there another place you reccomend in the us preferrably close to cali, millers in near my house also. Are the parts the same as the 230sl shifter as i think millers carries alot of sl stuff and not much w111 stuff

yeah i called millers it looks like the parts i need bushings washer circlip will cst around 30 dollars. i love the 111 coupes, my landlord has a 66 250se carbio though in mint cond hes put 70k in it awsome car white with black top

You don't need the classic center, any dealer with an on-the-ball parts department can do this. I replaced all the bushings in my 230SL (same arrangement) for under $100. The parts weren't in stock at the dealer, but they were in the warehouse in Baltimore, so it was a next day thing.
