Transmission ID for 1973 280 w114
I'm having problems determining definitively whether I have 3 or 4 speeds. Apparently some 1973s may have come with 3 speeds. The local mechanic says it is probably a 3 speed (hasn't seen the car), others say they have a 1973 that has 4 speeds, but I need a site or a source where I can call and get the info. Tomorrow I'll try the dealer, but if there is a site where I can go to input my transmission serial number, I'd appreciate knowing about it.
It seems to be revving too high at 65-70mph. I don't have a tach in the car. My transmission is 114 270 15 01005297 Any help would be much appreciated. |

All 4/5/6 cylinder cars from 1968-90 have 4 speed auto transmissions.

The 6-cylinder cars from that era have pretty deep rear end gears and 4th gear is 1:1, so they do turn a lot of rpm at highway speeds. In other markets they had a 5 spd manual available, which I think had overdrive for 5th. Not for us Americans though
