1966 230S - what is it worth?

Folks

I usually drive a diesel but saw this local fintail

http://vernon.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1966-MERCEDES-230S-W0QQAdIdZ162897930

The seller wants $3500. He claims the car body is sound but the tranny slips. He has a replacement tranny as part of the deal.

My guess is that the car has done over 100K or over 200K miles.

Any tips on what I should look for?

The value depends on condition. That might be a good deal. You would want to know if it is rusty. Transmission rebuild is not a deal killer, but it will scare away the casual enthusiast. If the car has truly been garage kept its entire life, the price discount he is taking in consideration for bad transmission might be fair. Is the seller an original owner? Dealer or Private seller?

My 1962 has 219,000 miles with a strong engine and transmission. $3500 is not a lot of money for a classic Mercedes in poor but restorable condition. I paid a third of that for mine but it was left for dead.

Yes rust is the number one issue. My wife has a 380SL so I know all about rust

I am not familiar with the drivetrain of these cars so was wondering about any particular nasties to look for.

It is actually a very simple, straight forward car. The engine, transmission, and rear end are way easier to work on than any modern car. Same with brakes, etc. Parts are easy to find and not crazy expensive.

I made a video of my project...

Decided to pass

Well I went to see it and fell in love with the body style but I am reluctant to take this one on.

The car hasn't been driven for 10 years although the owner claims it runs. Most of the seams were rusty and the cross member behind the front bumper was totally rusted out.

The interior was in great shape and if I wanted to take on a project this would be a good car. But I don't have the time right now to strip down a vehicle and do a ton of bodywork so I decided to pass.
