any experience in painting rear and front axles with Por-15 engine enamel?

Hi all,

I read with a lot of interest the thread on rust proofing as I will take advantage of having the rear axle, prop shaft and transmission out of my W111 Coupe (I may also take the fuel tank out) to treat the underside of the car.

I saw by browsing the internet that Por-15 also makes some engine enamel kits: http://www.por15.com/ENGINE-PAINTING-KIT/productinfo/EPKA/

I am currently restoring a manual transmission with a steel casing and a rear axle for my W111 Coupe. I thought i could use that kit to paint them as well as the prop shaft (and the front axle when I rebuild it at a later stage). I do not have any equipment so I would paint it by hand with a brush.

Does anyone have any experience with this product for this type of application? Or are there other products better suited for what I want to do?

Thank you very much in advance!

I used the hempel boat epoxy for steel boats as a final surface for my W115 restoration. Grey on the floors inside and black on the axles.

Here`s what there lies under floor-mats:

Gael,
For undercar painting, you don't really have to overcoat POR-15. But you can if you want a colour different from the black or silver or clear that POR15 comes in. I have painted a lot of car parts, mostly sheetmetal,as well as cast iron boat keels and have not used their prep products. Generally, if you get the surface clean, you can coat it with POR even if there is rust present. But using the the marine-clean and metal prep may help a bit.

POR provides a reasonable finish when brushed. It sort of self levels. It can't really be sanded once cured, so I don't use it in areas that need a great finish. One thing to remember, is that it cures using moisture from air. Once you open a can, transfer it to a plastic bottle and put a piece of plastic between the screw lid and the bottle.Store it upside down. If you don't do this, the surface will skin over and it takes a drill to get at the paint! That is, if you can get the lid off - POR is also a good adhesive!
