1971 600series swb...

Anyone here have a 600series? We bought one about a year ago and it's still sitting the same as it was when we unloaded it. Trying to decide what to do with it,restore it or sell it. Have way too many things going already and don't know if we want another iron in the fire. Bought it in basket case form and that is how she sits today, car is in pretty good shape but needs total restoration. All the glass is good, the interior is better than average, wood is there but needs refinishing and some restoration, surface rust at the lower part of the windshield posts, chrome all there some will need rechromed, block has been prepped and heads reworked. PO could or would not provide much history on car,he did say bought it from an individual in California in the same shape it is in now.How about some opinions/ideas.

Wow that sounds like a monumental project. I think you could describe it all day long but some pictures would be instrumental in evaluating the condition.

Have you tried the M100 board? http://www.m-100.cc/

This will be the best place to find some help on the net for a 600

Here's a simple two step system to help you out with your situation.

Step one; Run away screaming, prefferably with your hair on fire, nudity optional.

Step two; If you return home and you still want to restore that beast, repeat step one.

Don't listen to that. Restore it and you'll be the coolest guy on the block because you don't go places, you arrive. Period.

The justification was in the point of fact. Hydraulic windows.

Leave it where it is, keep it washed and waxed, and every once in a while, sit in the driver's seat, turn the steering wheel a bit and make "vroom-vroom" noises with your lips. Any other scenario will bring far less happiness and far more opportunity to file for personal bankruptcy...

The 600 is my dream car. And it will forever remain so because of the costs involved. Go to the M100.cc website and look at the postings in the 600 forum. There's one there labled "in detail" if I remember correctly. An ongoing report of work that's being done on the rear suspension. Quite the horror story from what I can tell. And this I think is on a car that's in reasonably good shape.

There is also a buying advice post. My advice, don't. W140's are cheaper.

The way most people get into a 6.3 is with a 300SEL. Now, let's say you buy this 600 and the engine's shot. No problem, get a running 6.3 and use the engine from it, right? Well, that's about all that will work in the 600!

If you have money (as in a few dozen grand), then the question becomes do you have time (as in a few years), then go for it. There is nothing that can stop a 600 from being restored easier than falling $10k short or 1000 hours short. The rest is just a matter of patience, which if you have a few thousand spare hours, shouldn't be much of an issue

Top Gears take on the 600. Take note of Jeremy's last service cost.
