Whoaaaa...!!!!!

I guess I qualify with my '62 Coupe fitted with a 3.5 M116 V8, and even more so when I will shoe in a euro 5.0 with a 5 speed manual.

What about FB Gruppe, for FrankenBenzes?

Squiggle Dog 08-26-2010 08:47 PM

Haha, is that an OMG617 in that wagon? I see people lower the rear of their cars by removing the compensating spring, but it must really eat the tires with the wheels angled like that!

It looks like we have several candidates for Gruppe B membership here!!

One of the foundation principles of the Gruppe should be modifications using Mercedes Benz parts for modifications. Putting a Chevy V8 in a Mercedes will still be considered sacriligeous. As I write this... I recall that my alternator is Japanese made for a Ford truck. Oh well...

How about a 1949 170 with turbodiesel and Afrika Corps desert beige paint scheme and Afrika Korps markings?

Coming next year, if all goes well with the building project.

DO IT!

my camera batteries were all flat so i didn't have chance to get some shots of a couple of candidates. one is a PERFECT W111 that the owner bought cheap and I'm helping him install a M117 5.0 liter and trans. it hurts to work on this car as it wasn't even dirty underneath . It was given to it's first owner as a 21st birthday present and remained hardly used for most of it's life . It's like working on a NEW finny.

Thew other is Drewcus' Finny with deep tinted windows ,wide whitewalls, red mettalic paint,W108 diff, fourwheel discs and m130 280S engine. The engine was new one he recieved as part of deal on a part restored W108 and never used.

My own 6.3 has EDIS and i got rid of the water pump to fit a EWP . That gives me easier starting, better economy, and a touch more power. Next idea is to install water injection and twin throttle bodies but i need to rebuild my injection pump first.

In my reading, I stumbled upon this thread. I didn't want it to fall away! I am hoping to find a 5.0 M117 engine to put in my 1970 250C, and maybe end up with something like this someday:

This thread definitely shouldn't disappear, Jeff took the trouble to mention me by name in the first post. And on a slightly more modest note I'm flattered to be a gruppe B member. My 300sd fits right in with the ethos. Maximum reasonable performance from an engine that was never in any meant to go fast. Egr delete, manual boost controller, analog boost gauge, pyrometer, tuned IP, resonator has been straight piped, glass pack muffler, well adjusted valves, vacuum system simplification, alloy bundts (courtesy of Daw Two, a true gentleman) and all kinds of other goodies. I'm planning an intercooler (sitting on my parts shelf) and a swap to either a holset hx30 or a var. Geometry turbo.

GRUPPE B IST UNGLAUBLICH! (I think that translates to "unbelievable)

I had two M117 5.0's and they were worthless. I ended up selling an engine / tranny combo for $500 and dismantling the other and selling the heads , cams intake.

Both came from Euro 500SEC's.

Al, if you lived closer I could see us finding a 240d 4-speed cheap as chips, lightening it (quite a lot, if were honest), hot ridding the IP, and adding a vnt and a custom free flowing intake and exhaust. Eh? Or maybe we could make some kind of frankenstien jag D-type racer?

What? you mean an XJ12C that runs strictly on propane is not enough?

LPG conversions are ace, especially when it keeps old cars from getting scrapped or sitting idle.

Why were they worthless? Compared to the stock 2.8L, I would have thought the M117 5.0 would be an awesome upgrade.

No idea, I guess people don't want to ship an engine. I have a Euro M110 on ebay right now from a 77 SL for $350. No bites so the M110 is equally worthless :)

We just bought a rust-free 6.3 that we're turning into a vintage racer. When selecting care, the word "beast" defines our final target. I want loud, fast, and mean.

I'll do a thread on the car when it get delivered next week.
