The Outlaws of Gruppe B
Hello Peaches,
I was reading an article in Automobile Magazine about Gruppe R, the club for hot rod vintage Porsches. They are a world-wide club limited to 300 members who are invited to join. Their cars are modified in ways that disturb the "Purist" crowd; like putting a 3.6 liter engine in a car that originally had a 2.2 liter engine, or painting the car wild colors and adding graphics. The Emerald Bullet is my inspiration and reason to feel like an outlaw. I changed the generator to alternator, and swapped 2.2 liter for 2.8 liter engine, and switched the 4-blade fan for a 6-blade unit. These items mean that my car is no longer "original", so I am embracing the bad boy inside. My ambition is to start our own outlaw club called Gruppe B. I can think of several Peaches who would qualify like MercMad6.3, Jive Turkey, and DAWII. Anyone interested in joining?

Sound like the club I am in. "cept we pissoff the concourse Cougar crowd. We even brought our own trophy to a national meet in 2005. Gave it to the best "Modified". Was a blast.
The Curb.

Sounds good to me, how do you shoe-horn a V8 into a 280C, haha.
I'd settle for EFI and no distributor in the 280C though...I guess I already have the alumn wheels that have the hubcaps over them. All it takes is time and lots of $$...I think I need to learn how to weld... I do love the RGruppe though, cool period looking cars with hotrod tweeks hidden.

What's in a name?
So, how did you come up with Gruppe B? Do I become a member AFTER I drop the w108, 67 250SE motor into the w180, 58 220S ponton?

Well, I guess I'd qualify.
Got my '72 250C powered by a fuel injected M115, (that makes into a, what, 235C or a 250C 2.2?) converted to a 4 speed manual, Sanden A/C conversion, electric fan cooled. My '73 280, Holley carb conversion, electric fan cooled. My '74 280C, being Megasquirted (yes, I'm taking pictures and will post the progress, just calm down Nathan ) with the interior from a '71 250C. My '85 500SEL, Megasquirted and in the process of converting to wasted spark ignition. The '85 kind of bums me out. I was hoping the tranny was trashed or something major would be wrong with it body-wise because I had these visions of dropping the M117 into my 280C. No such luck. Darned thing is mechanically sound, more's the pity. Too nice of a car to trash so I guess I'll just have to bear up under the burden of driving around in a W126. |

Haha, I'd say all those cars would qualify, as long as they look period correct with some hot-rod mods.
BTW, congrats on all the megasquirted mods, you are a trailblazer! To give some of you an idea of what R Gruppe is in the West Coast Porsche community: http://www.tremotorsports.com/gallery.cfm?Node=10304 Also, I've personally been inspired by this car!!! looks like he removed the bumpers and made his own f'glass front bumper...nice!!!

Only mod so far for my 250C is Unity fog lights instead of the factory originals. I plan to do a custon paint job too.

I had a 1967 W111 230S that I put a turbo diesel engine into. Unfortunately the car rusted out.
I currently have a 1980 W116 300SD that I am putting a 5 speed manual transmission into and converting the power windows, sunroof, and heat to manual. I'm also installing Euro lights, rear headrests, and factory seat heaters on 4 seats. I have already installed bumpers from a 6.9 and 15" Centra wheels. I plan on giving it a two-tone paint job and two-toning the interior as well. It won't be a car for a purist, but at least it will have a factory look.

I like the idea. I have been 'upgrading" a few things on my fintail. I put 15inch steel wheels, I found a factory AMG front sway bar out of a 300sel 6.3 which fit
in the fintail. I also have the rear bar, but that may take a bit of "moding" to make fit. I also have a set of custom springs on the way which are going to be a bit shorter to lower the car a bit. I will also look at some engine upgrades as I get more things completed. Bla8310 |

It looks like we have several candidates for Gruppe B membership here!! One of the foundation principles of the Gruppe should be modifications using Mercedes Benz parts for modifications. Putting a Chevy V8 in a Mercedes will still be considered sacriligeous. As I write this... I recall that my alternator is Japanese made for a Ford truck. Oh well...

Every vintage Mercedes deserves to live. However, it is not always practical or possible to restore every car to Concours de Elegance standards. I am happy with safe, reliable and beautiful with a big side order of COOL!!

So true. If you find a good deal on a 600 limo about the only way most people will be able to afford to drive it will be to de-option it and maybe swap out drivetrains and suspension, etc.

I LOVE this idea... i've been seeing some cool benz mods recently... here's a few to get some inspiration going!
all of those were lowered pretty much, which i'm not a big fan of personally, but to each their own... now this one though, i could deal with owning... "w123 mercedes custom fitted with supercharger and turbo charger with intercooler air to air and mobil oil cooler" And a little video of it in action- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czV3fwZ73gc |
