1973 220D Gearbox/transmission Fluid
Hi can anyone help me out with how I check/fill the transmission fluid up on this car ? I have never done it and I couldn't see where it goes in or where I might check it. I'd really like to check it out and maybe change it because I think it hasn't been done in a long long time.
Thanks!! Last edited by agentw; 04-24-2012 at 11:58 PM. Reason: Spelling.. |

Manual gearbox =>
Right hand side of the gearbox there's a plug near the top => spill to fill! Drain is underneath near the front. Automatic => With a warm transmission that has been allowed to settle down a bit on a level surface and with the engine running check the dip stick that is next to the engine (right hand side of the car again - so looking at the engine from the front on the left hand side).

For both the manual trans and the differential:
Before draining, ensure that the fill plug can be removed. Jim

This is a typical ZF four speed manual gearbox, found under an old MB.
Red arrow is the drain plug, blue arrow the fill plug. ![]() |
