silly question.. Please tell me the Correct way
Can someone please tell me the correct way to remove the headlight switch? I need one for my W108 and took one from my W108 parts car but destroyed the switch getting it out. I think the switch from my euro W123 parts car will work, no?
If so, how do you remove the knob to get the switch out? I get the little chrome piece that unscrews, but then there is the knob, or handle of the switch. I consider myself a decent mechanic and do feel a bit silly asking this but I always really appreciate the help I get from these forums. Thanks, Kevin

Do I just have some really sticky knobs? can someone else verify?

never dealt with a 108, have you checked under the knob for a set screw? otherwise it just pulls off and I think a 24mm nut holds the switch in place.

Read #8 on this link: Mercedes 108 Wood Removal - Jaime Kopchinski
It verifies what others have said, the switch should just pull straight out when in the off position. Here's a link to an image of the knob if that helps any: http://www.joetlc.com/images/1105451137.jpg Photo credit goes to eBay seller Joetlc btw.

Can't speak for a W108, but on the W123 it's straightforward.
WARNING! Disconnect the battery first. The screws on the switch are connected hot to the battery and you can zap things easily. Pull - hard - the plastic switch cover straight away from the dash. There are no hidden screws, it's just very very hard. Then there's a plastic trim ring and a thin nut. I forget the sequence. Then you push in and drop out the bottom. I'd take a photo of the wires so you're sure which ones go where. |

On the finnys and the W108 you undo the chrome ring slightly first, then pull the knob with a pair of pliers and it will come out .If it wont come at first, undo the ring a bit more.
Yers the Euro switch works OK, I do not know if there is a difference in the USA versions such as left and right park lights (turn to left one or two clicks) and fog light position (pull knob out and turn to the clockwise direction) |
