looking at a 1973 W114 280

Hello,

I am looking at possibly purchasing the above car but have a few questions:

1) The rear deck badging, VIN and motor serial # (110.921) all reference that it is a 280 but the certification tag on the left door pillar says "250 /8". Is that the Euro version or is something not right?

2) How reliable are the M110 engines? This one has a carb.

3) According to the owner and some of the service records the milage is only 89k miles. Besides changing all the fluids, what else would you recommend for the engine?

The owner wants $4000 for the car, but it does need tires, the exhaust fixed, possibly a fuel tank and/or new fuel lines, a few rust spots repaired, paint job, etc. I live in Canada but was wondering what sort of prices these cars have getting lately.

Thanks,

Marc-André

I don't know why Mercedes came up with the 250/8 as the sales designator for this car, but I have seen them with the 2.8 engine many times. Some have dual carbs, some have only one.

The '/8' part of 250/8 says that this body style, which was referred in to as the 'New Generation Body', was first introduced in 1968.

These cars are very robust since they were designed from the ground up for taxi service. Since most were not used in that way they tend to last a very long time.

If you buy this have not only the fluids changed but the valves adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing. This might cost a bit more but it will be worth it. If you hear a ticking coming from the top of the engine that is not a lifter, it is a worn spot on the cam.

That's really about all the help I can give you.

much fun and "pretty" easy to work on. Pull up the carpets and look for rust , Check trunk and frame "rails" for the same Dual carbs can be a pain but once sorted out are OK.
4K is alot of money for that car, considering what you think it will need. I'd say it sounds more like a "less than $2K " car. How is the interior, any real service history?

I will be putting the car on a hoist tonight to see what else is needed. Thank you very much for the feedback, I'll keep you posted.

I took it for drive last night. Did not bother to put on a hoist. Best part on the car was the original spare tire!!! Oh well.
