W114 seatbelt conversion
Can anyone point me in the direction to a DIY to modernize the coupe's seatbelts? It currently has the reeled lap belt with clip in, non retracting, shoulder belt. I'd like to change this setup to today's standard retracting three point belt.

I just bought generic (modern) seat belts and bolted them in. I needed to disconect the warning buzzer and reuse the OEM bolt, spacers and washers to keep from damaging the upholstery. They do not line up perfectly, but they function well and are safe. Another option is to buy OEM belts for a 74 - 76 coupe, they have the modern belts. Mine is a sedan, the coupe may present some challenges I did not have to deal with.

You might check with kraakevik, he has lots of W114/5 parts.

Cool site, wonder if they really have all those parts (I see they even list floor pans!)

Many thanks for the mention, Nathan--I'm out of shoulder belts with inertial-reel units

So best solution is to retrofit 74-76 parts? ANyone know if its a straight swap?

It is a straight swap--or close to it. Mount the reel on the pillar--you may have to cut off a locating dowel on the reel or drill a hole in the pillar to accommodate it. Mount the shoulder-strap guide higher up on the pillar where the shoulder-belts were attached--just make sure the bushings and spacers are assembled rationally

So I'm finally getting around to ordering these. Looking at these https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/seatbelts-and-accessories/3-pt-retractable-lap-shoulder/m.products/25/view/57. They seem correct, and I would mount the shoulder loop where the belt currently hangs from. Now the question is, do I need any additional mounting hardware?

Check these guys out. Made in USA, good quality, very fair price. Installed them in my 250C and I love them.

Does anyone have some decent pics of the 1974-1976 Coupe seat belt setup? I can't seem to find any. The reel is mounted on the floor, and the loop is just behind the door. Need to know how these are installed.
Found some semi decent pics. Seems that I just need to mount the reel on the floor, and mount a new loop near the door where the attachment point currently is. |

What is the problem with the classic Kangol seat belts? I love the design and in an unusual accident in which you are trapped by the seat belt I understand they are much easier to escape from. Is the problem that they tend to let you out a little early?
Why were these phased out for more modern designs? |

Coastal220, the non retractable shoulder belt drives me nuts. Also, my lap belt webbing is frayed, sticks, and passenger reel is slow.
bcbens, Thank you! |
