w108 heater core question
I had the heater core rebuilt (1968 250S). Installed it in the car and it worked fine in the shop. The first time I drove it out it the car overheated and the core leaked after only about 15 minutes on the road.
The radiator shop that repaired the core is saying that the leak may have been caused by electrolysis from the core not being correctly grounded. There was no ground on the core when I removed it. Should it have had one? And does this make any sense to you guys? He wants to charge me $95 more (have already paid $235 the first time around). Also, since I was on the road when it happened I had the car trailered to my mechanic and now owe the mechanic for the (second) core extraction and replacement. Thanks for any advice you can give. I have had a few of these apart and there is no grounding strap involved. And if they are talking about the coolant you had in your system just eating the core up.... In 15 minutes?
It is possible there was air in the system, or that the core was plugged up when you received it. In any case the grounding strap theory is incorrect. I would not go all postal on them about this since they appeared to have made an honest mistake. But I would work with them to find the cause and hope they would put some effort into it. |
