Question about radiator on 1972 250

When I would put my 250 in reverse gear you would hear a noise coming from the radiator area. I had my autoshop check it out. They found that the radiator was too close to the fan when you put the car into reverse.

They put a small piece of wood in between the radiator and the holding frame of the radiator. How can I fix this so that I could remove the piece of wood? How could this have happen?

Weird. Have you got the two rubber pieces on either side of the radiator?

I have two rubber "donut" looking things on the top left and right side of the radiator. Are these what your talking about"

But there doesn't seem to be anything on the bottom of radiator.

The only thing I can think and this is a stab in the dark. My 280ce (114) has an auto transmission and there's a cooler for the transmission fluid at the bottom of the rad? Maybe you have a the wrong radiator?

At the moment, I'm using a w123 (280) rad and with a bit of adapting by using the clips it sits in nice and is well clear of the fan. I'll have a good look at my 250ce tomorrow in the light and see if I can think of anything else.

I think that you should have a look at your motor and trans mounts. When you go into reverse, there is obviously something moving.

BTW - how about only one car in your signature?

From what I know is that when you put your car into reverse the engine moves forward a little bit, right?

How is the radiator held in on the 250? Is there a frame that the radiator fits in?

I thought I changed the signature to have only one picture, but I guess it didn't work. Should have only one now.

Thanks,

The radiator is basically fastened to the frame and should not move if you have the rubber pieces in the bottom and the donuts at the top.

Is the fan hitting the radiator or the fan shroud?

The fan was hitting the radiator. I looked I don't see any rubber piece on the bottom of the radiator.
