1966 W110 Tail Light Wiring

Hey Guys & Gals,

I finally found my right, rear tail light from Germany, but forgot to mark where each connection goes into the numbered block that is numbered 1 through six. The wires are color coded so can anyone tell me which color wire goes to which number? Thanks for any help. The wires are these colors:

Brown (short/ground)
Green/Black
Green
Black/Red
Grey/Red
Grey/Yellow

If you'll tell me where the block is located, I'll take a look for you.

Thanks. It plugs right into the tail light housing that has 6 prongs.

Can you open the block on the other side? I don't know if the colors are the same overall but I am sure the brown one is the ground on both taillights.

So that would be one down and five to go. That would only leave you 15,625 combinations to sort out.

Ummmm.... Maybe you had better wait to hear from Carpenterman.

Actually, the left side is all hooked up and is probably the same. Duh! Why didn't I think of that?

Found out that the left side is completely different than the right except for the ground wire. None of my manuals show this set up.

If the left side was not different from the right side your turn signals would not work correctly. That being said, the ground, tail light and brake light connections should all be in the same location and be the same color wire from side to side. Why not run a test light between he known ground and the various unknowns while activating each system independently, i.e., turning on lights, stepping on brake pedal, activating turn signal, etc. This experiment should rapidly demonstrate which wire does what. Don't forget, those cars also have a very small lamp in each tail light housing that provides illumination while parked on the roadside at night. Like the turn signal light, these lamps are "handed" and will be powered through different colored wires from side to side.

I have found that to be the case on a lot of German cars from that era. Porsche and Mercedes seemed to move away from this in the early 70's.

The only wire I would expect to find the same color would be the brown one since that is the ground. But even then Mercedes did not standardize on brown for ground until, it seems, the mid-sixties. Sometimes the ground is solid black, sometimes the 12v positive is solid black. It can make for a long day.

I have also found these plugs to be mirror images of each other. This makes it almost impossible track down which wire goes to each light unless you remove the taillight housing and build your own 'map' of which plug prong goes to which socket.

This is not hard. It it time consuming. But it gives you a chance to clean each connection while you are in there.

Then, as suggested, check each wire against a function of someone turning on a light, hitting the brakes, etc....

Like I said: None of this is hard but it can take an hour or so.

And.....

I have a factory wiring diagram for your car. It is totally useless for what you are wanting to do since it does not show the colors.

I think the factory manual, the big one, did have a fold out color wiring diagram. I know the one for the 600 did. So this might be worth searching for online.

You might try searching Ebay for a manual. Sometimes they come up very cheap. And if you don't want one in perfect condition, such as an old shop manual, you can pick them up for little more than the cost of shipping.

Thanks Idle. I appreciate your help. I think the process of elimination is the way to go, unless Carpenterman can come through.

! incoming !

________ _________
! green black !

! grey black/green !

! brown grey/red !

The colors I saw do not correspond entirely to your color scheme. I am sure of all the colors except for the black. I couldn't tell if there was a line or just wear on the insulation. The wire was very short. It looked straight black.

Hope this helps.

OK, my little text drawing did not look the same when it got posted. Let me try this:

Looking at the back of the block with the cover removed.

Incoming wires at the top. Top to bottom.

Left to right

Then left to right

Then left to right
---------------
green then black

grey then black/green

brown then grey/red

I did not see any numbers for reference on the block.

Thanks, Carpenterman. I think this may do it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Can you post a photo of the bulb holding assembly from your car? There were several used over the years and from one model to the next. It is possible that a previous owner might have swapped in one that worked but not the right one for the car.

There is no need to remove it from the car. Just a shot from inside the trunk would be enough to identify just which bulb holder/assembly you are working with.
