No key for a 1975 300D
What are my options to purchasing a key that will operate not just the ignition but also the door locks. this is a good running vehicle.

Depends on whether the ignition lock cylinder has ever been changed. If original then a trip to your nearest Mercedes Benz with appropriate paperwork is all which is needed to order a factory replacement.
Check with the dealer as to which documents they require as different dealers may have specific requirements.

If the door keys are both the same as the trunk key then they are probably original. If the door keys work both doors and the trunk but not the ignition then the ignition lock cylinder has probably been replaced. Hopefully the dealer can get you a new ignition lock key cylinder and key by VIN.
Probably have to go to dealer and prove ownership. Good luck!!!

Do you have any keys that will operate anything on the 1975 300D?

I lost the key At some point. Switch is the same as doors. Seems I read somewhere that Mercedes has dropped earlier years on making original keys but did not say what year the cutoff was. I can only hope before 1975.

I don't know the pin situation on these locks, but on other cars from that era the key might be the same but the lock pins are not.
The ignition key is the important one. Say it has seven pins. Then the door lock would have only five pins and the trunk lock only four. So this means that you can't get your hands on someone's valet key and try to make copies of the trunk key. The hard way to do this is to find a lock smith that can cut a key from the code on the ignition cylinder. I think there are something like 656 different combinations. Or some sort of number like this. The easy way is to call a mobil lock smith and have them come to your location and make a key through the impressions. This is easy to do with a brass blank from which a steel key can then be cut. But those brass blanks are not as easy to come by as they once were so it might take a while to find one. And while this is easy it is not cheap. But sometimes it is the only way. |
