Well number 4 is for your headlights.. it has several positions.. if you turn it all the way to the right your headlights are on. If you have foglights you can pull it out a notch and they come on but only if you are using lowbeams I think.

The other positions are I guess for tsting your signals.

I don't know what the other buttons are for but I think 1 is for your rear passanger overhead light.

I think number 2 is for your rear glass defrost as I have a pull button for that in my car that lights up ..or used to. Number 3 appears to be stereo left right balance but I can't be sure.

#3 is for your radio..it controls balance (or fader- I forget)

#2 is for the rear window defroster.

#1 is indeed for the rear overhead light.

#4 (the headlight switch, operates like the ones in most other Benz's that were built for a good 20+ years after that one was built) i.e. (going clockwise): standing/parking light left - standing/parking light right - off - running lights - headlights - pull for fogs.

The standing/parking light is used on narrow one-way streets, so that other drivers can see your car. Or, if you want, you can turn whichever side applies on, and feel safer that way, while parking on a side street.

The standing lights are required in Germany, where you are often parked with one side up on the crub, the other in the street. Must be lit at night so no one hits you on the narrow street.

The only time I've ever seen them on in the US is when someone turns the switch too far.

#5 The orange triangle in the bottom of the instrument cluster is the low fuel warning light. Ignore it at your peril -- mine comes on at about 19 gal on a 25 gal tank.

#6 Alternator charge indicator light. Comes on when you turn the ignition on, goes out when the alternator is putting out juice. I'd personally prefer an ammeter.

wow...I need a new monitor....I never even saw the numbers 5 & 6 on the image.

I sometimes use the parking light when I visit my aunts house, and park on the side of her street. There isn't a streetlight nearby, so with a black car, it's kinda dark there, and this gives me peace of mind.

Have fun!

Larry:

You probably don't need a new monitor, but you do probably need to turn down the brightness and turn the contrast up. Start with the default center setting and twiddle until you can see the numbers on the pic, its as good a test target as you can get short of a monitor calibration program.

I keep mine set up with the Apple color profile for graphics work (mixed lighting). Works fine. Don't know if there is anything similar for Windows, since I only use it at work.

Peter,

Thanks for the help! The brightness was turned all the way up. as was the contrast. I fiddled around a little, and wandered upon RGB controls. Turning the up a little, brightened things up to the point to where I had to turn down the brightness. Oddly enough, a twitch that I had seen on the upper left hand corner hasn't manifested itself in about a week. Because of this twitch, I thought that maybe it was just getting old. Its a Relisys 19" (max res. 1200x1600), and about 4 years old. It is driven by an Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 (new PC, old monitor)

Larry:

One of the nice things on the Mac is the color matching. Easy little program to set up the monitor so what you print looks like it does on teh screen. Windows should have something similar, but I'll bet it neither obvious nor simple.

Nearly every PC I've had to use had the monitor set funny.
