So the dumba$$ across the street.....

backed into my benz
The daughter of the old people that live directly across the street was backing out of their driveway and didn't even attempt to turn the wheel and plowed into the rear divers side door. The car was covered at the time, so the paint isn't scratched, but it doesn't matter because the door is f*cked.
So, she said that she will pay whatever it costs to fix it, but there is no way they will be able to fix the door. I'm taking the car on Monday to one of the most expensive body shops here in San Diego for a quote. I'm pretty bummed, but whatever. The door can be replaced. The car is nearly 38 years old now and has never been in an accident until now, so it sucks.
Anyone know where I might be able to find a door in socal just incase a body shop has a hard time? Thanks guys.
BTW, I'll post up pics tomorrow.

Bummer, make it expensive for her!
You see so much dumb crap people do when driving these days, you wonder who taught them to drive.
You just have to hope that sooner or later they will kill each other off but they seem to be reproducing too quickly and always seem to try to take someone else with them.

Try This Place

Boy, Deja Vu all over again, as Yogi said.

A couple of months a go, my father-in-law launched his Caddy into my 280E's front passenger door. Given he's family, I can't take him to the cleaners for repair costs, though Deisel Dog thinks otherwise. Two quotes so far, one with a used door, sprayed to match and one with dent pulled and filled, also sprayed to match. Both are around $700 for the job. My paint color is MB 906 a clear-coat light blue metalic. Quotes for a door from "Recyclers" are about $200.

I used Silver Star Recycling to get a set of used wheels. They have inventory on their web site so you can actually check colors and cars. www.silverstarrecycling.com/

Good luck, Alex

Hello,
Looks like it can be fixed, even the chrome strip is still in one piece, but I shudder to think of the labour cost to remove the dent, fill and then paint to match.
Sorry to see that such a nice car had to be in a stupid accident like this.

I think that I will be better off just finding another door. I'm fairly concerned that the motor inside the door may be messed up and I really wanna keep my glass from this door since every piece of glass on the car is original (minus the windshield). I dunno, I'm going this morning to get a quote.

I just got back from the shop. They gave me quite an impressive estimate of $1730 for the work. I sure hope this person can afford that.

They originally didn't wanna report it to their insurance, but maybe they will want to since its so expensive. But then again, maybe she has a bad record and can't afford another accident. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

That happened to me way back a while ago, before I actually got "possesion" of my car. It was sitting next to my uncle's garage and the neighbour ran into the rear driver's side door. Unfortunatly, it wasn't covered by a tarp or anything, and the car wasn't insured at the time, so if I want to switch the door it's up to me. I'll probably end up leaving it for now... assuming I get to keep the car. In any event, good luck with the door... and make her pay extra for emotional damages too...

Hey Kim,

Bummer on the door......keep us posted on how it works out for you or if you need advice.

As I've mentioned to you before, I think the W108's are among the most beautiful chassis Mercedes built. Please keep it on the road.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Oh how I don't miss living in residential neighborhoods!!!!!!

Personally, I HATE body filler, so I would try to find a nice clean door to replace yours with.

I assume you don't have much better of a place to be parking this fine little classic other than in the street, or you probably wouldn't be parking it there. But darn, I'd sure be trying to find somewhere else to park it other than in the street... that's like begging to be hit! God I hate parking my cars on a residential street! Accidents like this always happen when u do!

I assume the lady that hit it had the decency to come over and tell you she hit it, and that you weren't present when this occurred? If so, I'd try to be decent and not rape them if they had the decency to come and tell you what they'd done. I know it HAS to piss u that this happened, but, MOST people would have put it in DRIVE and hauled butt and never admitted what they'd done.... So if she did it when you weren't present, and had the decency to own up to it, I'd toss her a kudo or 2 for being a good respectable and honest human being, even if she CAN'T drive... lol

My sympathy, however it could be worse. The damage looks isolated to the door and not the surrounding fender or driver door. It's also a detachable part so you don't have to worry about rust beneath the bondo in the fender a few years out. Go with a replacement door as 68 Mercedes said, body filler sucks.

If have trouble finding a good enough door, find Les Blumner in Taos. He should have at least one, if not 5. He's skiii on ebay I think. -CTH
