w116 280s & 280se

i own a 1979 280s and i am from South Africa, what would like to find out is the following: In S A the m110 engine has two seperate exhuast manifolds and then a y-piece pipe connects the manifolds and then the exhuast pipe connects onto the y-piece.

in american versions does the m110 motor have two manifolds, and do they also have the y-piece connector.

My '73 280 (114) has dual manifolds and the Y-pipe. I believe every 110 I have ever seen has the dual manifolds. I remember seeing one with dual exhaust all the way back but it might have been an aftermarket conversion.

My 1976 W114 280C with M110 had a catalytic converter as part of the exhaust manifold. Great big stainless steel thing.

w116 280 exhuast

Seeing That All 280 W116's Has The Dual Manifold System, How Does One Go About Repairing The Ever Present Leak Where The Front Manifold Connects With The Y-piece Pipe.

I Have Fitted Numerous New Seal Rings Here And The Manifold Is Quiet For About 2-3 Days And Then Starts Leaking From This Jiont(where The Manifold Connects With The Y Piece).

Is There A Special Way Of Fixing This Or Some Special Procedure, This Is A Very Anoying Problem In An Otherwise Very Nice Car.

Please Help !!!!!

Can't help you on the "Y" piece, as my 280SL has seperate manifolds and seperate pipes all the way back.

This would be a right-hand drive car, yes?

I wonder if you have a home-made Y-pipe. Every 110 that I have seen has a cone-shaped end on the header pipe that fits into a similarly shaped outlet on the exhaust manifold. Then it is secured with a plate and two good-sized bolts. No way for them to leak.

If someone made a Y-pipe and used a ring instead of a cone-shaped end, I can see how you would have problems.

Sounds like you need to get a proper Y-pipe or get a cone-shaped inlet welded on to the one you have.

Hope this makes sense.

The closest pic to what you're describing is this one:

Otherwise, they all have dual pipes if they have 2 header pipes. Either someone converted your system to a single pipe all the way back, or someone removed your catalytic converter. See:
