W108 floor shift ?

Just wondering I have a floor shifter off a w108 250 the shift pattern is P R 0 4 3 2 what exactly is 0 would that be the German way of saying neutral? In addition, why no first gear inquiring minds want to know can any one answer this oddity?

yes zero is neutral.

for whatever reason mb never puts in a 1. s gives you a first gear start and wont shift beyond 2 unless you get to the redline then it will shift on up.

Can't explain the 0 but some shifters are labeled D, S and L which indicate Drive, Slope (as in hill) and Low. Don't know why they don't label low as first except that not all trannys start in first.

Speaking of floorshift 108's - here's a pair of 4-spd stickshift models that nobody wants to touch on ebay. One from New Mexico looks superb with recent herring bone wool seat upholstery. The other in California is column shift model with just a blown headgasket - not hard to repair on the m130 engine.

When selling my 4-spd 116 I was stunned to learn that an automatic was actually more marketable. More than 1/2 dozen prospective buyers walked away when they heard the car was standard shift.

Here's a pretty swanky 108 floor shift in Germany.

Nice

Nice but my floor shift is an automatic I got it with a bunch of W111 3.5 parts it is cool but I doubt I will ever find a use for it and I don’t see a big EBay market so it will no doubt end up as a can, which is a shame.

Dave. It's Park, Reverse, Neutral, Fourth, Third, Second. These tranny's did not have a manually selectable First gear. First Gear will engage with the lever in 4th only when you floor the gas pedal all the way to the floor and activate the kickdown switch that's under it. Without using the kickdown in most normal driving if you pull away from a rest gently it will start in second. Many people dislike this system. Myself. I rather liked it in my 71 280S. I had it down so that I could stomp the gas and get the kickdown to select first, then wind her up and just let off ever so slightly on the pedal to enage second with a kind of slingshot effect. Surprised the hell out of ricers between lights in town. Lots of fun.

I see

I see sounds like a good way to do it actual what threw me was the use of 0 for neutral. I really hated the thought of stashing it in the attic or worse pitching it so for some hope of it getting a new life I threw it on eBay figuring a lot of the ball shift handles must have broken and you cant really replace them stock without replacing the whole assemble. I thought I was just wasting my listing fee but in a few hours, I got a bid. Now in less than 24 hours, I have 4 questions I am glad some one can use it because it is cool.

Now what HELP

So I put it on EBay and now I have 2 people that swear it is off a w113 250 or 280SL and may also be used on a W111. He claims all w108 cars use the same shift pattern as the W116 and W123 with P at the top and 2 at the bottom and that the W111 coupe w113 250 or 280 SL use the shift pattern this has. The other guy claims it was only used on the W111 coup or the W112 300SL based on the shift pattern when I got the part I was hot tired and had been stripping a W111 280SE coupe most of the day. However, I am sure it did not come off that car I marked the part 250-coupe 1967 w108 now there is no W108 coupe is there any opinions especially based on the shift pattern on what it really is here is a link to a picture of it on EBay any help solving this mystery greatly appertained. I pulled this part for a friend building up a custom rod and thought he would like it turns out he had found one he wanted to use now I would just like to recoup my cost but don’t need a big hassle of a buyer saying it doesn’t fit the car I said it would. I would not cry over the extra food money if it were for a W113 though any ideas to determine its origin there is no part # at all anywhere.

Probably not for a 3.5 or 4.5 - I believe they all go from the top down (not vice-versa) and I know that all 4.5's are labeled "P R N D S L". I believe the 3.5 is the same. It's probably just for older 111's and 108/109's with inline sixes.

It's the early style shifter with park at the rear.

Somehow, I think the Feds made them put park towards the front, much like the change from the high grill to low grill 280SEc. 'Do it or else!'

So I am not going crazy

Now I have 3 people saying it is not a w108 shifter. I am not going crazy from the sun it is for a W108 right? I even pull the vin tags when I take parts and it says it is a w108. I have not yet found a photo of a W108 with this gear configuration but I was starting to suspect it was a first generation deal. It would not surprise me at all if the feds made them change it after a few thousand cars were imported. For safety or other reasons I am just going to put a disclaimer in the add that many people are saying it is for an SL and if you want to pay the price of a W113 floor shifter great. But don’t cry when you find out it is not for the SL. that should save me from refunding on it. It gets hot in the wreckers epically when you have been at it for 8 or 9 hours already I learned long ago you wont remember later the car it is from and mark every part. And no doubt tick off a lot of future customers but I take all the VIN tags when I get 1K of them I will eBay those too LOL Oh god if it was from a W113 and I pulled it without noticing it was a w113 I would have to turn myself in to the nut house for a long stay.
Thanks for your help

The shifter in my car...

The shifter in my 68 280SE (108) is like the one you are selling on e-bay. Park is at the bottom and everybody who gets into the car asks me why the shifter is backwards. I think the park was moved to the top of the shifter in mid 69 when the automatic was changed from the K4A-025 to the K4C-025 on 108 6 cylinder cars.
